Tim Speedle grew up in suburban Syracuse, New York. His father owned a chain of family restaurants and his mother was a volunteer with Social Services who devoted her life to helping those less fortunate. He's got a brother who's thirteen years younger than him, which is part of the reason they never developed a close relationship -- Speed preferred to sit alone and read.
Speed was a science nerd in school, pretty much. He and his best friend led their high school's science team to the State Championship four years in a row.
His best friend was injured in a snowmobile accident on their senior trip, months before graduating. They'd planned to go to Europe together and then to college, plans which died as a result of that one night. That night was also what motivated Speed to go to college at Columbia and study the biology of paralysis. Two years later, he was at the top of his class. His friend died from complications during surgery and Speed gave up, dropping out of school and disappearing.
He surfaced a year later, calling his family from his friend's uncle's house in Miami. He still didn't know what he wanted to do with his life, though. He began going to work with his friend's uncle -- at the Miami-Dade crime lab. It caught his interest and he absorbed everything he could about the work. He met Megan Donner and she took him under his wing. He quickly realized this was the work he wanted to do.
He went back to Columbia, finished his degree in a year, and returned to Miami to take an internship at the crime lab. Six months later, he was working as a full-fledged CSI.
Speed was a brilliant CSI whose life and work were cut short when he was killed in a jewelry store shootout. The universe apparently thought that was something that needed to be rectified, as he was given a second chance at life and sent back to Aiode Falls as a teenager. Since his return, he's made quite the life for himself -- school, a family, and a chance to do things over.
